John Jones is involved in a variety of projects ranging from the large and complex £30 million contract to the smaller quick turn around £50, 000 contract.

A120 Stansted to Braintree, Essex

This project comprises the construction of 21km of dual carriageway and 4km of single carriageway, including four new major interchanges with the existing A120 and two major river crossings. The earthworks contract involves the moving of 2 million cubic metres of material, controlled using GPS machine guidance. Up to eight systems have been used which, to our knowledge, is the first time a major project of this type and size has been managed using the GPS system.

Channel Tunnel Rail Link

John Jones has completed two contracts for bulk earthworks on two sections of the CTRL. Contract 430 was for the 15 km between Charing and East Ashford and Contract 420 was for the 22 km mid-Kent section. The company is currently working on Contract 342 which comprises the construction of 3.5 km of track and involves moving 2 million cubic metres of material. During the contract, twenty three hours of excavation was carried out during a 74 hour weekend possession to remove 45,000 cubic metres of earth and the North Kent Line railway embankment, enabling a 111 metre long three span rail bridge to be slid into position.

N4/N6 Kinnegad to Kilcock

This 100 week contract involves bulk earthworks to 13km of the N4/N6 Kinnegad to Kilcock motorway as part of the upgrade of the N4 road to form a dual two lane motorway. Of special note, John Jones will undertake more than 1 million cubic metres of rock excavation and processing as part of over 3 million square metres of earthworks

L'Oreal Distribution Centre, Manchester

As part of the construction of a 22,000 sq metre warehouse facility, the excavation and deposition of 14,000 cubic metres of earth avoided the need to import materials by providing the building platform for the warehouse along with 7,000 sq metres of road and parking areas. It also enabled the formation of landscape areas.

A505 Baldock Bypass, Hertfordshire

The design and construction of 6.5km of dual carriageway bypass around the village of Baldock involves a large element of land reinstatement. The main engineering feature is a cut and cover tunnel through a predominantly chalk spine. John Jones will construct earth mounds to screen views of the bypass and the side slopes of these so that the area can return to farmland. The mounds will also act as noise protection for residents. The company has invested £200,000 on a global positioning system for this contract which eliminates the need for conventional setting out.

Katrine Water Project, Scotland

This contract involves moving 400,000 cubic metres of material to enable the construction of a new partially buried Water Treatment Works. Of special interest is the fact that John Jones will be processing all the granular material required from on site rock.
